Final Fall

Today I walked out the door in a bright red jacket

for the last time,

pretending to ignore the sharp chill

peeking into my sleeves,

the cold scent wrapping around my wrists like bracelets,

like ropes.

Tomorrow brings light.

Tomorrow brings darkness.

Tomorrow I’ll remember when

I could just walk out in a red jacket,

when time lasted longer,

when love wasn’t so complicated…

But one can always fall in love

after the fall.

All they need to do is take a deep breath

and walk out the door.
