Big Girl

Oh hush, little girl–

Why are you so afraid of the night?

With no experience

you think,

“Life is not supposed to be this dark.”

Oh, but it is that way.

And you, in your fragile attempts

to stave it off,

to hold your blankets and animals

as you drift away,

have forgotten that there is, perhaps,

another way.

To open your eyes

yet hold your comfort close,

and then let the darkness go.

To stand, a big girl,

in front of the dark gloomy abyss

of ever-changing anxiety,

and tell it,

simply, finally,

“No.”
