Understanding

You’ll understand when you’re older

what it’s like to live a lie.

You’ll know then how to break a heart

and scratch the teardrops dry.

You’ll understand when you’re older

how to break and how to bend.

You’ll hurt the ones you care for most

and say it’s all pretend.

You’ll understand when you’re older

how to steal and how to cheat

just because they cannot catch you

when you’re lying in the street.

You’ll understand when you’re older

how the truth hurts all the time;

so much that you won’t believe it

and simply get in line.

You’ll understand when you’re older

how to keep your heart so cold

that the mask will feel like nothing

when your pride has all been sold.

So quickly run away child

back to your fairyland

and keep your mind so bright and kind

until you understand.
